Man shot after advancing toward CSU officer with a handgun near Newton Plaza
Colorado State University says gunfire followed a 5:35 p.m. report of a man acting erratically on the main campus Monday. The man was hospitalized, no one else was hurt, and a multi-agency team is investigating.
FORT COLLINS
A Colorado State University police officer was involved in a shooting on the university's main campus Monday evening, after a man armed with a handgun advanced toward the officer near Newton Plaza, according to a university alert issued after the incident.
The university's account, carried by both the Fort Collins Coloradoan and Denver7, is specific about the sequence and careful about its limits. "On October 12, 2026 around 5:35 p.m., Colorado State University Police received a report of a person acting erratically near Newton Plaza on Main Campus," the alert said. An officer responded and located the man, who was armed with a handgun and advanced toward the officer. Gunfire occurred and the man was shot. The officer immediately rendered first aid, and the man was transported to an area hospital for care.
No other injuries have been reported, and the university was explicit about what the incident was not: "This was not an active shooter incident." Denver7 reported Monday night that the man's identity had not been released and his condition was unknown, and that it was not yet clear whether he was struck by the officer's shot. The university's statement does not attribute the shot, saying only that gunfire occurred during the encounter.
Students received a text alert at 6:02 p.m. warning of police activity and directing people to avoid the area between the Chemistry and Microbiology buildings. A second alert at 6:50 p.m. gave an "all clear," while police activity continued around the plaza. Newton Plaza is ringed by the buildings housing chemistry, microbiology, education and behavioral sciences, the Coloradoan reported, and its reporters on scene after the all-clear found police vehicles encircling the plaza behind yellow tape, a few students watching from outside it, and a helicopter circling overhead.
The Eighth Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team has been activated to investigate the officer-involved shooting, and Fort Collins Police Services is the lead investigating agency. Any further information about the incident will be released by that agency, the university said.
Monday's shooting is the kind of campus emergency universities rehearse but rarely face: an armed man on a central plaza, a responding officer, and a campus alert system that moved from warning to all-clear in under an hour. What investigators still have to establish, and what the university has not yet said, is who the man is, why he was on the plaza with a handgun, and exactly how the gunfire unfolded in the seconds after the officer reached him. Those answers now sit with the Critical Incident Response Team.
