Sex Pistols' Carter halts Denver show over women-only mosh pit
The Friday confrontation at the Ogden Theatre came as the band tours North America for the 50th anniversary of "Never Mind the Bollocks."
DENVER
Fan-filmed video from the show shows Carter confronting the man from the stage ahead of the band's performance of "No Feelings," Consequence of Sound and Page Six reported. When the concertgoer shook his head in disagreement, Carter fired back: "It's not your lived experience."
Carter told the man he could "see me outside after the gig," according to Consequence of Sound, before venue security removed him. Carter continued defending the women-only space from the stage, arguing that women cannot mosh safely in a general pit, both outlets reported.
The exchange stretched on after the man brought up the venue's all-gender bathroom, which Carter answered with sarcasm before calling directly for security, the music outlet musicandgigs reported. The site reported Carter then introduced the next song for the women in the room.
The women-only mosh pit is a fixture Carter sets aside at each stop of the band's current North American tour, Consequence reported. The tour marks the 50th anniversary of the band's debut album, "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols."
On Saturday, Carter addressed the Denver incident in a series of Instagram Stories, writing that any man offended by a band making room for a women-only pit was "part of the problem," Consequence reported. He said the space was meant to be trans-inclusionary, set aside for people who do not usually feel safe moshing, according to the outlet.
Carter also shared a message he said came from the ejected man's father, apologizing for "my idiotic son" and writing that the behavior was not how he was raised, Consequence reported. Carter, formerly of the band Gallows, fronts the current Sex Pistols lineup alongside original members Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock, according to musicandgigs.
The Denver show was part of the band's ongoing North American run, Consequence reported. Carter has made the women-only pit a regular feature of the tour rather than a one-off, and Friday's confrontation was the latest in a string of onstage defenses of the policy.
The 42-year-old Carter formerly fronted the hardcore band Gallows before joining the Sex Pistols for the anniversary run, according to Page Six and musicandgigs. Original members Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock complete the touring lineup, and the women-only pit has become a regular fixture of the shows rather than a one-off.
The Ogden Theatre show drew national coverage over the weekend, with the fan-filmed confrontation circulating widely on social media. Carter's Saturday message closed the loop on the incident: the pit stays, and it is not up for debate.
